Our Team.

Our team are passionate about the Scola approach to early childhood development.

Óran O’Connor

Founder – Director

Óran grew up in the world of early childhood. Geri, his mother, has spent 35 years of her adult life working in the field, and founded The Children’s Garden in 2005. Óran’s passion for providing remarkable early years education was founded in his years studying Psychology at the University of Western Australia and continued to develop as he proceeded to work as Business Manager at The Children’s Garden.

Here, Óran assisted in the development of an ‘early years’ educational curriculum which has, and continues to, exceed national standards in all facets. An appreciation for early years education and the influence of early experiences on a child’s life, matched with a passion for providing an exceptional education to Australian families, led to the creation of Scola Early Learning as a means of providing best practice education to Perth families.

“What a child can do in cooperation today, they can do alone tomorrow.” – Lev Vygotsky

Nichola Lam

Education Leader and Early Childhood Teacher

Nichola has been working in Early Childhood Education as a Teacher for over a decade. Having graduated from Monash University in Victoria with a Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies and a Masters of Special Needs and Inclusive Education, Nichola has been using her skills to enhance children’s education as a teacher at both The Children’s Garden and Scola for nearly a decade.

Nichola’s skills are beyond count, but her speciality is the energetic and messy plays!

“I love sensory play (the messier the better) and experiments as children form new ideas and inspire their own learning. I also love the physical play as it provides opportunities to build perseverance and resilience.”

What excites Nichola about coming to school? The bright smiles of the children as they walk in with excitement. The space where children can be children, exploring their world and when they children light up with a sense of achievement, celebrating their victories.

“Our task is to help children communicate with the world using all their potential, strengths and languages and to overcome any obstacle presented by our culture.” – Loris Malaguzzi

Fion Yan

Early Childhood Teacher

Fion was born and raised in Guangzhou, a city in southern China. At the age of 17, she moved to Sydney to pursue her Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Linguistics and Education at the University of Sydney. She later completed a Master of Teaching in Early Childhood and Primary Education at Monash University in Melbourne.

Fion has seven years of experience working in primary school settings as both an assistant and a classroom teacher, with a strong focus on the lower primary years. She is excited to bring her knowledge and skills to Scola, as she continues to explore what children at this developmental stage are capable of. Fion is committed to creating a learning environment that is fun, caring, and purposeful—where children can enjoy themselves while also being gently introduced to foundational concepts that prepare them for the next steps in their learning journey.

With a warm and nurturing teaching style, Fion values qualities such as integrity, honesty, and confidence. She encourages children to become curious learners and resilient individuals who feel safe, valued, and empowered.
